Canberra Outdoor Structures recently built a garden cottage for Carly and Ben Drysdale’s family in Conder. Initially, the cabin was meant to be built as a sleepout for guests, but in the process young family found out they were expecting a second daughter and would have run out of rooms inside their house!
“Carly had a very clear idea of what she wanted the cabin to look like and she designed and styled it beautifully” – said Murray Fleming, the builder. “We had the custom project modified to the client’s taste. Also, the new building had not to obstruct the views of the Lanyon Valley visible from the main house. So, we had Crete cabin prolonged with the additional room for the bathroom.”
The talented owner was inspired by older style homes with the historical feel. “I managed to find vintage doors online and they were freighted from Melbourne, these brought some extra charm.” – said Carly.
“I wanted to create something cozy but bright and airy – said Carly. “When I painted the inside stark white, I was a little worried it was too much, but once it was decorated, it was the perfect canvas. Our guests love it, and so do we!”
“Murray and his team were so accommodating and happy to personalise areas for us. These include a bigger deck which steps down using spotted gum, a structural frame and moulding for our doors and the bathroom addition.” – said Carly.
We asked Carly why she chose YZY Kit Homes. “I love the exposed timber, the natural knots and joins and the ceiling beams.”- she said. “The hinged windows and gold fittings are gorgeous and suit the overall style I was trying to achieve.”
The Cyprus cabin was recently built for John in the Snowy Mountains as a house. John happily shared his feedback and kindly let us photograph and film his newly built and styled home.
“It serves me well, I’m very comfortable in my new home. Anybody who has come to my new home was very very impressed!
And I was amazed about how well the building insulated is. I only turned the Air conditioner on once or twice during summer even on we had 5 days straight of over 40 degrees.” – said John, the owner of the Cyprus home.
“I had quite a few minor queries, things that I did myself and Canberra Outdoor structures team came in and helped me with things in a timely fashion which impressed me.”– said John.
John has recommended us to several people, so we’ll see more YZY Kit homes in the Snowy Mountains or anywhere else in Australia.
Interior and exterior colors
Exterior walls of John’s house were stained with Burnt Gum. And let me say it looks stunning with the classy white window architraves. Interior was stained in the clear finish with white painted window frames.
The building has underground power connected from the main house. And the existing house sewer line was used so the stormwater just goes to the existing tanks.

Looking back at 2018, it’s been yet another amazing year with many Scandinavian cabins, granny flats and even homes built across Australia. Use of YZY Kit Homes was very diverse. While larger 1 and 2 bedroom buildings were used as a main house, accommodation for guests or B&B, smaller studio-type cabins were mainly used as a teenage studio, a home office, parents retreat, a pool house and a craft room.
The need for more space starts the process. Clients consult with the builder exchanging ideas, builder looks at the site potential and restrictions. After a few discussions, working together teams find the most suitable solution. And the results are amazing, take a look at some of the cabins built in 2018.
This Classic style Craft room was recently built by our team Canberra Outdoor Structures in ACT. Cabin was custom designed to suit the client’s needs for a functional craft room. The building has a spacious one room in total size of 25m² plus a room for storage.
In the 6.6 m wide back wall there are 3 Built-in wardrobes installed to organize neatly all craft materials. Lots of windows and French doors bring the natural light in to the room.
We added Colorbond steel on rear wall for built-in wardrobes not compromising on the room space. The cabin was professionally painted inside and out, still a few finishes to completion. Owners are very happy with their new building. I bet lots of beautiful art pieces will be made in this new addition. – said Murray Fleming, the builder at Canberra Outdoor Structures.
This cabin features double glazing on all windows and doors. Laminated timber construction, tilt and turn windows – European standards all over. It’s made for a draft-free and comfortable work space. “It would be hard to find many houses of such quality as this craft room in Canberra.” – said Murray with a smile.
This modern guest house was recently built by Canberra Outdoor Structures in Canberra. Our Sicilia cabin built with a spacious deck warping the cabin on two sides was customized to suit young family’s needs to have a home office as well as a space to accommodate guests.
The building has a 4 m x 5 m main room with a 2.7 m by 1.8 m bathroom. Bathroom was added and built from a conventional construction with Colorbond steel cladding all around. Steel cladding extended to the rear northern wall of the building allows for the buit-in wardrobe.
Our [Canberra Outdoor Structures] quote was half the price compared to other granny flat builders and speed of installation was important. Now young family has a comfortable space to accommodate parents coming down from Sydney to look after their child – said Murray Fleming, the builder of this beautiful project.
Young professionals, owners of the building undoubtedly have a taste and talent for home design. They chose two-tone color scheme for both exterior and interior of the studio. This makes the building consistent throughout. White walls contrasting with deep dark toned window trims made their new building fresh, modern and elegant. Inside of the building is light and airy with abundance of natural light and white walls and ceiling. Bathroom floors were tiled with dark tiles and again contrasted with white subway tiles on the walls. Owners chose trendy black shower mixer and vanity taps to complete the stylish new room in their backyard.
